CHOIR DIRECTOR

 Job Description

 

Conditions:

1.      The position and title shall be that of “Choir Director.”

2.      The term of employment shall commence on September 1 and continue through June 30.

3.      The Choir Director is allowed 6 personal necessity days. 

4.      In the event that the Director plans an absence on a Sunday during the employment period, the Director shall confer with the Pastor, preferably at least 10 days in advance.  Absences due to sudden illness or emergencies will be handled as best as possible.

5.      The salary of the Director shall be $600 per month for the year 2009 and shall be payable monthly.  Salary and performance shall be subject to an annual review.

 

The duties and responsibilities of the Choir Director shall be as follows:

1.      The Director shall select the music, keeping in mind that the music should match the singing ability of the choir, be appropriate for Lutheran worship and follow the emphasis of the liturgical calendar.  The Choir Director must work closely with the Pastor and worship teams to coordinate the music selection with the theme of worship.  The purchase of music must be within budget allowances.

2.      The Choir Director shall rehearse the Choir at weekly rehearsals.

3.      The Choir Director shall direct the Choir during Sunday morning and Festival worship services.

4.      The Choir Director shall arrange, rehearse, and direct special music programs as agreed upon by the Choir Director, Pastor, and worship teams.  Special consideration shall be given to planning for mid-week Lenten services, Holy Week services, Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving Eve services.  The Choir Director, in cooperation with the Organist, shall arrange for instrumental accompaniment or solos and vocal solos or groups as possible and appropriate, particularly for Festival Sundays, utilizing the talents of congregational members.  Professional, paid musicians require prior approval from the Worship and Music Team.

5.      The Choir Director shall cooperate with any other special music groups and other staff within the Congregation.  These groups shall consult with the Choir Director and the Pastor at least three weeks ahead of time for participation in worship services.

6.      The Choir Director shall work with the Pastor, Organist, and worship teams in coordinating the entire worship experience of the congregation.  The Choir Director shall be expected to attend worship team meetings.  If unable to attend, the Choir Director shall notify the chairman.

7.      The Choir Director is expected to attend workshops introducing new forms and liturgies adopted by this congregation.  Fees and travel expenses are incurred by the annual budget.  In addition, the Choir Director is encouraged to attend any other musical enrichment opportunities subject to approval by Council.

8.      The primary duties of the Choir Director during the month of June, after the Choir’s last Sunday for the year, shall be to consult with the Pastor and worship teams to plan special music for the summer services.

9.      The Choir Director shall actively encourage new members to join the Choir and shall promote a feeling of cooperation and esprit de corps within the Choir.
